I caved in to office pressure, stopped the backup, shutdown the server and turned off the UPS - beeping stopped. Have just turned everything on and so far no beeping. With regard to the software, the APS site is confusing as I can see Mac OSX listed but the files just seem to be PDFs or HTML guides - no actual software.
